Nearly every chest, contract, and successful boarding feeds the same long-term goal: a ship that forgives mistakes. If you ignore upgrades until the story spikes, you will feel the ocean flatten your enthusiasm. If you grind aimlessly without story breaks, you will feel the world flatten your attention. Alternate: follow walkthrough pacing for mission beats, then spend fifteen minutes per session clearing nearby coastal chests before sailing to the next marker.
Officers reward attention
Officer arcs are the human face of your ship upgrades. They give you reasons to return to ports besides shopping menus. If you tend to skip dialogue, consider at least skimming objective text for officer quests—mechanical rewards often hide behind short land segments you can complete with the same combat and stealth habits you already practice.

Collectible hunters should keep the Jackdaw strong enough that travel never feels punishing. Nothing kills a fragment sweep faster than repeated sinkings because you refused to buy hull armor. If you are stubborn about difficulty, learn brace timing first—free defense—then spend currency second.
